Marshal, Earl of Pembroke

William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke,
born 1146.
He mar 1189 to Isabel de Clare, 4th Countess of Pembroke [born c.1174].
She was dau of Richard de Clare, "Strongbow", 2nd Earl of Pembroke and Aoife Mac Murrough.
She was descendant of Charlemagne and of Brian Boru.
She is NOT descendant of Edward the Elder.

Marshal rebuilt Pembroke Castle, Wales, 1189.
He rebuilt Kilkenny Castle 1192.
Isabel's family's title, Earl of Pembroke, was re-created for William in 1199.
He rebuilt Chepstow Castle, Wales, c.1200.
Founded New Ross, Co.Wexford.
Founded Tintern Abbey, Co.Wexford, c.1200 (later seat of Colclough).
He built Hook Lighthouse, Co.Wexford (survives, oldest working lighthouse in the world). See images.
He built Carlow Castle 1208 (ruin survives).
He rebuilt Usk Castle, Wales, c.1212-19.
Through his wife he inherited Dunamase, Co.Laois.
The first mention of Dunamase Castle is 1215, when John ordered Geoffrey Lutterel to hand it over to Marshal.
He appears in King John by Shakespeare.
Governor of England 1216-19 (in minority of Henry III).

He died 1219, age 73 yrs.
He was bur Temple Church, London.
Isabel died 1220, age c.46 yrs.
She was bur St. Mary's Church, New Ross, Co.Wexford.
1st Earl and Isabel had issue:


  1. Maud Marshal.
    She mar 1stly to Hugh Bigod, 3rd Earl of Norfolk and had issue:

    1. Isabel de Bigod,
      mar 1stly to Gilbert de Lacy and had issue,
      mar 2ndly to John FitzGeoffrey and had issue.

    Maud mar 2ndly to William de Warenne, 5th Earl of Surrey and had issue.


  2. William Marshal, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, died 1231.
  3. Richard Marshal, 3rd Earl of Pembroke, died 1234.
  4. Gilbert Marshal, 4th Earl of Pembroke, died 1241.


  5. Isabella Marshal, born 1200, mar Gilbert de Clare, 5th Earl of Gloucester and had issue.

  6. Eva Marshal, mar William de Braose, Lord of Abergavenny and had issue.


  7. Joan Marshal,
    mar Warin de Munchensi, Lord of Swanscombe,
    had issue:

    1. Joan de Munchensi,
      mar William de Valence, 1st Earl of Pembroke [her family's title re-created for him] and had issue.
