My ancestors - O'Mara - Contents

17 Thomas St, Limerick

Home of James O'Mara.
James' wife died in Aug 1878.
He moved to Thomas St in 1878. Presumably just after his wife died.
His son Stephen writes an undated letter, but presumably 1878: "My father has taken Mrs. Oake's house in Thomas Street at Forty Pounds a year".
James died here in 1899.

Proof there has been no re-numbering

First we establish there has been no re-numbering.

Thomas St in [Guy's, 1893, vol.D, pp.80-81].
O'Mara at no.17.
Exact same numbering as below: O'Connell at no.2. O'Neill at no.8. Dowling at no.14. Delaney at no.23. Cahill at no.29. Hotel at no.30.

Thomas St in [Guy's directory, 1912, p.84].
17 Thomas St in 1912 is no longer the O'Mara house. It is the Gaelic League.
18 Thomas St in 1912 is "St. Ita's House" (must also be the Gaelic League, see the following).
Today, 18 Thomas St is still the Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaeilge) and is called "Halla Íde" ("St. Ita's Hall").
This basically proves there has been no re-numbering along the N side.

In the modern numbering, the numbers go up the N side of the street from 1 to 37, and then back along the S side up to 59.
This compared to [Guy's directory, 1912] indicates there has been no re-numbering for the whole street.
From here.

Thomas St on 1887 to 1913 map.
The hotel (then at no.30) is shown at the modern no.30.
This basically proves there has been no re-numbering along the N side.

The O'Mara house is the modern no.17

Therefore, the O'Mara house is the modern no.17, beside Conradh na Gaeilge at no.18.
