O'Sullivan

O'Sullivan/Sullivan is the most common surname in Munster, and the most common surname in Co.Kerry.
So we do not assume these are related to other O'Sullivans and Sullivans in the family tree.

William O'Sullivan, farmer,
of Kilmeany, E of Listowel, Co.Kerry.
He mar Johanna Dowd [son of John Dowd and Maria Margaret Fitzgerald].
He died 1889.
Think she is the Johanna O'Sullivan, age 60, widow, farmer, who is listed in 1901 census at Tullamore, N of Listowel, Co.Kerry.
This would be the surviving family listed in 1911 census at Tullamore.
William and Johanna had issue:


  1. Eugene O'Sullivan,
    born 19 Oct 1872, Listowel district, Co.Kerry.

    RIC policeman, 1895 to 1922:
    Eugene joined RIC 2 Jan 1895, age 22, no. 56869. See RIC record. Listed as "farmer", Catholic.
    He was allocated to Co.Limerick, 14 Aug 1895. Would have started as Constable.
    Listed as living Castleconnell, Co.Limerick, at marriage.

    He mar 1903 to Margaret McCoy [born 13 Dec 1874].
    He was transferred to Co.Cork. His daughter was born Co.Cork (West Riding) in 1905.
    As at 1911 they were living Timoleague, near Clonakilty, S Co.Cork (in Cork West Riding).
    Margaret and children are listed in 1911 census at 5 Main St, Timoleague.
    Eugene is listed in 1911 census as "E. O'S." on the (semi-anonymous) return for the RIC barracks, Main St, Timoleague. He is listed as Constable.
    Living Timoleague, Co.Cork, at Ursula's birth 1912. He is listed as Constable.
    He was promoted to Acting Sergeant 1 Oct 1913.
    RIC records say transferred to Co.Cork (West Riding) on 1 Feb 1914. They were already in Cork West Riding. Maybe this is transfer to Skibbereen.
    He moved to Skibbereen, SW Co.Cork.
    See item in Southern Star, 30 May 1914, where he saved a man from suicide in Skibbereen. He is listed as Acting Sergeant.
    See item in Skibbereen Eagle, 20 May 1915, where he saved two men from being hit by a train at Skibbereen. He is listed as Acting Sergeant.
    Promoted to Sergeant 1 July 1916.
    Served in RIC during the War of Independence 1919-1921. There were at least two attempts made on his life.
    RIC disbanded 7 Apr 1922. He received compensation allowance.
    They lived Glengarriff Rd, Bantry, Bantry Bay, Co.Cork (see map), NOT Glengarrif Terrace.
    Their son William is described as living Bantry at his mar 1937. Eugene is described as "ex RIC".
    Living Bantry at time of Margaret's death 1942.

    Margaret dies, 1942:
    Margaret died Nov 28, 1942, Cork Mental Hospital, W side of Cork city, age 67 yrs, of Hemiplegia, and Mitral Endocarditis.
    She was bur Bantry Abbey graveyard, Bantry.

    Eugene dies, 1946:
    Eugene was still living Glengarriff Rd, Bantry, at time of his death 1946.
    He died of a heart attack in church while attending mass in Bantry, Sun 20th Jan 1946, age 73 yrs.
    He died in "Bantry Catholic Church" [GROI] or in "the Convent Schools", Bantry [newspaper report].
    Cause of death was noted as "probably coronary thrombosis" in [GROI].
    Funeral Tue 22 Jan 1946. He was bur Bantry Abbey graveyard, Bantry.

    Eugene and Margaret had issue:


    1. Johanna O'Sullivan [or Joanna, Jo],
      born 1905, Co.Cork (West Riding),
      "Johanna Mary" in 1911 census.
      Can't find birth in that period in Clonakilty district in [GROI].
      NOT birth of Johanna O'Sullivan, [GROI], Clonakilty, 1st qr 1907.
      She mar 7 Nov 1933, St Joseph's, Limerick, to Matthew Kelly [Matt, born c.1900].

      They lived Tarbert, NE Co.Kerry.
      They are both at her father's funeral 1946, described as of Tarbert.
      He died 24 Mar 1956, age c.56 yrs.
      She died 31 Jan 1977, age 72 yrs.
      They had issue:

      1. Rosaleen Kelly, mar Robert Pain and had issue:
        1. Annette Pain.
        2. Matthew Pain.
      2. Owen Kelly, mar Elizabeth Ryan and had issue:
        1. Matthew Francis Kelly.
        2. Patrick Kelly.

      She emigrated to America pre-1932.
      At marriage 1932 she is living Detroit, Michigan. Occupation is "clerical".
      She mar 26 Dec 1932, Detroit, to Denis Woods [or Dennis, born 1904 [mar cert] or 1905 [census], Ireland, son of William Woods and Ellen Kelly].
      At mar he is "lineman", living Detroit.

      They lived in Detroit.
      Apparently living 1408 Collingwood Avenue, Detroit, in 1935.
      They are listed in 1940 US census at 1408 Collingwood Avenue, Detroit.
      He died 1 July 1954 of pancreatic cancer.
      They had issue:

      1. Denis Woods, mar Bonita Baitlinger.


    3. William O'Sullivan,
      Willie, William Joseph O'Sullivan,
      born 1909, Co.Cork (West Riding), according to age in 1911 census, or 1908 (by age at mar).
      Can't find birth in that period in Clonakilty district in [GROI].


    4. Ursula O'Sullivan,

      born Timoleague, Co.Cork, 20 Mar 1912.
