John Fitzgerald, 1st Earl of Kildare.

He mar Blanche de la Roche.
He was cr Earl of Kildare in 1316.
He was granted Kildare Castle, in Kildare town.
Though the seat of the Earls became Maynooth Castle.
1st Earl and Blanche had issue:


  1. Thomas Fitzgerald, 2nd Earl of Kildare.


  2. Joan Fitzgerald,
    mar 1302 to Edmund Butler, Earl of Carrick and had issue.

The old flag of Ireland, the Cross of St.Patrick.
This was invented in 1783.
It has been suggested (but not proved) that it came from the arms of Fitzgerald, Duke of Leinster.



Since 1801 the Cross of St.Patrick forms part of the Union Jack.
