Vincent Clement-Davies,
Vincent dies at sea, 1917:
He died Nov 1917 in the sinking of
the SS Umgeni.
He was age 28 yrs.
During WWI, the Umgeni was taken over by the Admiralty as a supply ship.
It left the Clyde
on 7 Nov 1917,
in a convoy
bound for Lagos, Nigeria.
Travelling W of Ireland,
the convoy hit bad weather
on 9 Nov 1917
and was dispersed.
The Umgeni was not seen after that date.
Bodies thought to be that of some of the crew were later washed up on the W coast of Ireland.
See also British & Commonwealth Shipping Company Register.
And discussion.
There were claims she was torpedoed
but there is no evidence of this. Most likely she sank in the
bad weather W of Ireland.
