John Leslie

John Leslie,
bapt 2 Apr 1654, Aberdeen.
He was son of George Leslie, Provost of Aberdeen 1685-1687.
He was a magistrate.
Member of Aberdeen Council.

This John is said to be our John

Extract from p.184 of [Munro, 1897].
Lists the children of George Leslie, Provost of Aberdeen.
Says that his son John (bapt 1654) is "probably" the same as our John who married Barbara Ædie.
If so, he would then be fathering children from age 43 to 69.
Not impossible, but this link perhaps needs more evidence.

Our line

As explained above, John Leslie (bapt 1654) above is probably our John Leslie, though it would make him very old having a large family.

John Leslie.
Baillie (city official) of Aberdeen.
Barbara Yates Gibbon notes say he was "one of the senior magistrates of Aberdeen".
He mar 1 Mar 1697 to Barbara Ædie [bapt 20 Oct 1678, descendant of Robert III, King of Scotland and of Henry I].
They mar at St.Nicholas', Aberdeen.
John is described as "late Baillie" at dau's bapt 1723.
John and Barbara had issue:

  1. Norman Leslie,
bapt 21 Nov 1697 [St.Nicholas', Aberdeen]. See entry.
Baptism sp by Barbara's granduncle Sir George Skene, of Fintray, former Provost of Aberdeen and Barbara's brother George Ædie.
Norman is listed in Barbara Yates Gibbon notes.

  2. George Leslie, bapt 10th Nov 1700 [St.Nicholas', Aberdeen].
  3. Katherin Leslie, bapt 18th Dec 1703 [St.Nicholas', Aberdeen].
  4. David Leslie, bapt 4th Apr 1706 [St.Nicholas', Aberdeen].
  5. Helen Leslie, bapt 20th June 1708 [St.Nicholas', Aberdeen].
  6. Margaret Leslie, bapt 28th Feb 1712 [St.Nicholas', Aberdeen].
  7. Mary Leslie, bapt 5th June 1715 [St.Nicholas', Aberdeen].
  8. Alexander Leslie, bapt 26th Mar 1718 [St.Nicholas', Aberdeen].

  9. Elizabeth Leslie,
bapt 10 Mar 1723 [St.Nicholas', Aberdeen]. See entry. Mother age 44.
One of the witnesses of the baptism was George Skene of Rubislaw (Elizabeth's much older 1st cousin).
Other witnesses of the baptism were William Sympson, late Baillie, and James Gelly, merchant.
Elizabeth mar 20 June 1748 to Alexander Yeats and had issue.
They mar at St.Nicholas', Aberdeen. See mar entry.
Cautioners for the marriage were George Skene of Rubislaw (1st cousin of Elizabeth) and James Chalmers, printer (possibly a cousin of Elizabeth).

  10. Anna Leslie.
She is listed in Barbara Yates Gibbon notes.

Marriage of John Leslie and Barbara Ædie, 1697.
There are two entries. Think 11 Jan 1697 might be the banns and 1 Mar 1697 the marriage.
His wife Barbara Ædie is written as "Jean" Ædie for some reason. But she is Barbara in all other records.

Baptism of Norman Leslie, 21 Nov 1697.

Baptism of Elizabeth Leslie, 10 Mar 1723.
