Hurly portraits (apparently mis-labelled)
The following portraits were
inherited by the Hurly family.
They were labelled as Denis Hurly and Anne Blennerhassett.
They were printed
near
p.177
of
[JCHAS article on Hurly, 1905].
See
caption.
Portraits then in possession of
John C.D. Hurly
in Fenit House.
Now in possession of
Hurly family of New Zealand.
However, they seem to have been mis-labelled. See the following.
This is labelled as
Denis Hurly (who married Anne Blennerhassett in 1701).
But it seems from a much later period.

Trying to date it by uniform and hairstyle:
- Looks like late 18th century or Regency hairstyle.
No wig.
-
Red uniform with harp.
Yellow facings.
Must be an Irish or Kerry regiment.
- AI models can often be wrong, but image recognition is something they tend to be good at.
For what it is worth, I asked
ChatGPT
and it said:
"Circa 1790-1810"
and gave detailed reasons.
It agrees he is not wearing a wig.
It said:
"Definitely post-1750 and into the Georgian/Napoleonic military fashion".
It thought most likely the
Royal Irish Regiment.
- Most likely candidate:
John Hurly, who was Captain in the Kerry Legion as at marriage in 1784.
So maybe Kerry regiment not Irish regiment.
This is labelled as
Anne Blennerhassett (born before 1683, married Denis Hurly in 1701).
Though it seems from a much later period.

Trying to date it by clothes and hairstyle:
- She has the neoclassical style,
which came in in the 1790s.
-
For what it is worth, I asked
ChatGPT
and it said:
"Circa 1795-1805".
- A (human) historical costume expert looked at it and said the dress and hairstyle are from the 1790s.
- Most likely candidate:
Mary Conway, wife of John Hurly.
