Mountcashel (area and titles)
In researching
Miscellaneous Cashels
we discover that there is a place called
"Mountcashel" in Co.Clare,
and also various "Mountcashel" titles.
It is unclear if any of this is relevant to
our Cashel family.
The Mountcashel area, near Sixmilebridge, Co.Clare
There is an interesting area near
Sixmilebridge, Co.Clare,
with a lot of "cashel" placenames.
Now
"Cashel"
means "stone fort"
so this might normally not be of interest.
Except we have a
Cashell (or Cashel) family
who possibly have their origin at
Ballynevan in this area,
or at
Sixmilebridge.
(This is however uncertain.)
In any case, in the Mountcashel area, near Sixmilebridge, Co.Clare,
are the following:
- Mountcashel
- Mountcashel Tower House
(or "Kilmurry Castle").
- Mountcashel
(19th century house, on lake side)
- Ballymulcashel
- Ballymulcashel Lough
- Castle Lake
- The townland Castlelake

There are three "Mountcashel" titles.
All of them refer to Co.Tipperary,
not Co.Clare.
No known
origin
with any Cashel/Cashell surname.
However, it is always possible that some
descendant of these families
might have such a surname (especially if a natural child).

The title of
Davys, Viscount Mountcashel.
- Paul Davys, 1st Viscount Mountcashel.
He
mar Catherine MacCarthy [niece of Justin MacCarthy, 1st Viscount Mountcashel].
He was
cr 1706.
Title name chosen from her family (her uncle's extinct title).
It
refers to Co.Tipperary.
He died 1716.
Title extinct 1736.
