No relation of Billy Smith.


Ernest Smith.
He was a farmer, at Shottesbrooke (near Lambourn and Newbury), Berkshire.
He had issue:


  1. Eph Smith,
    Eric Ephraim Smith, born 1915.
    He was a flat race jockey. See wikipedia.
    He was 3 times Champion Apprentice.
    He won three classics:


  2. Doug Smith,
    born 21 Nov 1917.
    He was a champion flat race jockey. See wikipedia.
    His first win was at Salisbury in 1931, age 13 yrs.
    He was Champion Apprentice 1937.
    He mar pre-1949 to Patricia Winter [Pat, born 1925].
    He was 5 times Champion Flat Race Jockey, 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1958, 1959.
    He won four classics: Retired as jockey 1967, after riding 3,112 winners in 20,009 rides.
    He became a trainer.
    He trained "Sleeping Partner" to win the Epsom Oaks 1969.
    Retired as trainer 1979, after training 500 winners.
    Doug and Pat lived at Newmarket (beside racecourse).
    Doug died at his home in Newmarket, 12 Apr 1989, age 71 yrs.
    Pat lived Loder House, Hamilton Rd, Newmarket. (A road lined with racing stables. See map.)
    She died at home, Loder House, 27 Jan 2009, age 83 yrs.
    Funeral 11 Feb 2009, Newmarket RC church.
    Doug and Pat had issue:


    1. Michael Smith.

    2. Wendy Smith.
      She mar Peter Reynolds and had issue.
