Tomb of 9th Earl of Pembroke

Tomb of Henry Herbert, 9th Earl of Pembroke (died 1750).
In Wilton church.
See findagrave.

Formerly on this tomb was an original bust of the 9th Earl by Roubillac, made around the time of his death in 1750.
The bust was sold around 1999 to establish a trust for church maintenance. A copy of the bust is now on the tomb.

The old monument

The old monument to the 9th Earl in the old Wilton Church was different.
WSHC 2057/H3/18a is an architectural drawing, date c.1750, showing the plan of the E end of the old Wilton church, with the monument to the 9th Earl.
The sketch is rough, but it can be seen it is a different monument to the monument to the 9th Earl in the new Wilton church.

Drawing dated c.1750 of the old monument to the 9th Earl in the old Wilton church.
From WSHC 2057/H3/18a. See larger and full size.
The monument to the 9th Earl in the new Wilton church is quite different.
The catalogue entry says that apart from the bust, "the rest of the monument has not survived".

"That the rich blood, which in thy veins has run,
Descends thro' thee, untainted to thy Son."

- Part of inscription on 9th Earl's tomb, which talks about his illustrious ancestors, and their blood descending "untainted" to his son the 10th Earl.
