Richard and I corresponded about the O'Rahilly family tree in 1991-1992.
His last letter to me, in Sept 1992, as I took a break from the tree to go to Cambridge: "You've certainly earned the right to get away from the demanding work connected with your position as the current de facto family historian and genealogist. ... I hope that well after you finish your graduate work, you will be able to continue from time to time as the premier genealogist for the entire O'Rahilly family and its many branches. ... Best wishes for a most happy and successful academic career. Sincerely, Richard".
I wrote in my diary: "There is no way he will be alive when I come back to this. This is his last message to me, and he will be dead. But he will know that I will carry it on. His last wonderful words of gratitude, and he will die. And we never met, except by post."
