Blake

1. John Blake,
   born 1838 (by age at mar) or 1833 (by age at death).
   He was a butcher and victualler in Thurles, Co.Tipperary.
   He mar 1stly to ----.
   She died.
   At 2nd mar 1866 he is victualler, "The Gate", Thurles.
   "The Gate" is "West Gate" or Westgate, at W end of Main St.
   He mar 2ndly, 18 Oct 1866, to Johanna Maher [born 1845, dau of Patrick Maher, victualler].
   At mar she is living Friar St, Cashel, Co.Tipperary. They mar at Cashel. See mar cert from here.
   They lived at West Gate.
   
   House destroyed in 1868: John Blake, victualler, West Gate, had his house destroyed on 28 Apr 1868 by the sudden collapse of a medieval building at West Gate. No one was killed. See article in Nenagh Guardian, May 2, 1868.
   Blake re-established business in a house at the corner of Kearney's Lane, Westgate. This is probably a different location to the old house.
   
   John Blake, The Gate, is listed under butchers in Thurles in [Slater's Directory, 1870, Munster, p.222].
   At son's birth 1877 he is butcher, "The Gate", Thurles.
   At son's birth 1879 he is butcher, "Main St", Thurles (would be Westgate, since Westgate is a continuation of Main St).
   At death 1882 he is butcher, "The Gate", Thurles.

   John dies, 1882:
   He died 19 May 1882, The Gate, Thurles, age 49 yrs. See death cert from here.
   Johanna ran the victuallers shop in Westgate, Thurles, after him.
   "Mrs. Blake", Westgate, is listed under victuallers in Thurles in [Guy's Directory, 1893, Tipperary, p.100].
   John is listed as "victualler" (deceased) at son's mar 1912.
   He is listed as "merchant" (deceased) at son's mar 1928.

      He ran an extensive business at 17-18 Liberty Square, Thurles. (Grocery, tobacco, wine and spirits.)
      He married in 1928 to Kathleen Lane.
